Preliminary reports coming in from yesterday's raid on Yeghe
and other Ogoni communities has put the death toll over 43. As at this morning,
16 persons were confirmed dead in Yeghe and 27 dead bodies have been counted in
Bori and surrounding villages putting the total at 43.
Although a report is
awaited on the number of deaths so far recorded, especially as old people left
behind are discovered dead, trauma is killing pregnant mothers and children and
some persons are been shot in the leg and taken away by the military men.
The number of deaths is expected to rise far above a
hundred. There are reports that the whereabouts of a large number is presently
unknown and the military is torturing even children of 7 years old.
The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP)
yesterday called for the immediate withdrawal of the soldiers. In his reaction, the MOSOP President, Legborsi Pyagbara insisted that there was no crises in
Ogoni warranting the invasion of the area by the military.
The situation has raised a humanitarian crises as hunger,
diseases and shock takes its toll on the population.
