A yet-to-be-identified student of the Kwara State
Polytechnic (KP), Ilorin, has been reportedly shot dead by unknown gunmen who
stormed the institution on Monday, February 22. According to The Punch, the
gunmen, about five in number, were said to have fled after shooting the
student, who was in his second year. Some of the students who witnessed the
incident said that they suspected the victim to be a member of a rival cult
group.
An eyewitness added that after the close of work on Monday,
one of the gunmen shot the student from a distance but when he did not get the
desired result, they all went after the student, grabbed him and pumped bullets
in his head before leaving him for dead. “The police raced to the scene of the
incident, took and deposited the remains of the student at the mortuary of the
University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital,” a source who pleaded anonymity,
stated. While confirming the killing, the institution’s registrar, Moses
Salami, stated that the police and operatives of the Department of the State
Services (DSS) had been patrolling the campus since the incident happened. He
said: “It is true that on Monday, around 7.30 pm, we learnt that one ND 2 student
was shot dead, and the police was immediately alerted. “They arrived at the
scene of the incident and took his corpse away to UITH. Since then, the
security agencies have been coming to our polytechnic to investigate the
incident.” Ajayi Olasunkanmi, the state police spokesman, said: “I heard that a
student was killed at Kwara State Polytechnic on Monday.”
